What's February got to do with it
As London explodes with happenings across the city, it’s important to remember that at Chateau Denmark, a good time is never too far away. Here's what's happening this month in London.
Leigh Bowery takes over the Tate Modern in convention shunning fashion. The 80s icon of London nightlife – an artist, performer and model - Bowery was also a fashion designer, musician and promoter. This exhibition kicks off from 27th February and shines a light on his life, work and collaboration with names such as Charles Atlas, Lucian Freud, Nicola Rainbird and others.
The Science Museum is home to so many of the world’s most striking recordings and ‘Versailles: Science & Splendour’ is no different. Learn how science played a pivotal role in moulding the architecturally stunning Versailles. From artifacts to displays, you’ll also be able to indulge in one of architectures’ finest times. From Jean-Dominique Cassini’s moon map to a watch made for Marie Antoinette and even the pioneering Madame du Coudray’s colourful backstory of transforming midwifery. Pegged as a “journey into history, power and innovation” the exhibition is open from now until April.
And so from a colourful time in architecture to a more brutal one – stop by the Barbican for their cross-art series Concrete Garden. Enjoy workshops, talks and screenings all celebrating Spring’s feelings of growth and wellness. The series is inspired by the work of American artist Noah Davis whose works include “Into Eternal Land”, exploring ancestral memory, ritual and migration. In addition Jazz pianist Jason Moran, also inspired by Davis, performs live. Open now until May.
The BFI’s annual festival for young filmmakers from 16-25 also kicks off at BFI Southbank from 20th February to 6th March. Here you can see a full programme of talks, discussions, keynotes and workshops aimed at connecting young film enthusiasts with industry professionals, peers and potential collaborators. Sponsored by Netflix the programme is curated by 10 members of the BFI Film Academy’s Young Programmers group and is out now.
Soho Calling is a showcase of new acts with immense promise and whole lot of energy. Taking place in all the right venues across Soho you’ll be able to enjoy All-female country pop trio Bluai, queer singsong writer Tom Aspaul, punk duo Punchbag and hip hop group Monster Florence. You can see them at beloved Soho venues including Phoenix Arts Club and The Social. Not to be missed – you can see more at Soho Calling.
